Does A POS System Help My Business?

What are POS Systems?

POS or Point of Sale.

Can be a broad definition which includes merchandising aids, displays and the methods used to enable transactions.

In our case, we will be talking about the hardware and software that runs your business from the front counter to your back office.

For a small craft store, a basic POS system would consist only of a computer, cash register (with or without a built-in cash drawer), receipt printer and a reliabe POS software. For a service organization, like a lawn care company, won’t be be needing a cash drawer or a receipt printer.

But they they may want a laser printer for their service invoices.

Then again, you have the flexibility to easily customize a POS system for your business needs.

Remember that the core of your retail POS system is the computer running the POS software.

We know and understand the temptation to use an older computer or perhaps those really low cost computer models available through the “superstores”.

But always remember, the moment it runs, it will be depending on this equipment, so a good quality computer is important.

If you want to have high quality use custom built POS systems, name brand parts and will work reliably for years.

The same advice goes for all the other components.

You may get the job done using the basic cash drawer, but the heavy duty models are built much better and can last longer.

A CCD barcode scanner is more reliable than the old pencil type wands, but they’re still designed to work with flat, easy-to-read barcodes.

About laser scanners, they not only have a greater range, but they can also scan barcodes on wrap around bottles, plastic bags or follow irregular shapes which is much better than the CCD scanners.

While barcode technology is improving, so is the printer technology. This machine that performs dependably under heavy use of the industry is used to be a dot-matrix printer, and they’re still fairly popular, but thermal printers are faster, quieter and more affordable.

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS’s), or battery back-ups, are affordably priced and can keep you up and running during short outages and power glitches. Remember, you will be depending on this equipment. If you plan to use it a lot, spend the extra money and get the heavy duty models and UPS units.

A retail POS system does not only give you the ability to control over your transactions, but it also puts a wealth of info at the palm of your hands.

Imagine being able to compare years or months to date of sales transactions with just a few keys. A database of your customers can be a powerful marketing tool.

Easily track inventory list, automatic creation of order lists and being able to adjust quantities based on demands are just a few of what a retail POS system can do for you.

Al in all, a POS system helps you keep a constant eye on your bottom line.
